Twisted Apples

TWISTED APPLES: Stories from Winesburg, Ohio is a new operatic musical by Jim Payne and Robert Elhai. Based on Sherwood Anderson’s classic American novel Winesburg, Ohio. TWISTED APPLES tells the story of those who struggle to overcome their loneliness and isolation in a small town in the early 1900s as they seek an active life of the imagination.

Joshua played George Willard in TWISTED APPLES over seven years as the piece was developed with Nautilus Music-Theater which culminated with a tour throughout Minnesota directed by Ben Krywosz. Audiences and critics have raved about the show, saying "Beautifully staged, gorgeous and evocative libretto and score, and knock-out singing / another fine example of how Nautilus and its typically superb composers, actors, and musicians pay attention to the subtle details that establish real characters and show us what they think and feel / the music and lyrics are rich and compelling / an excellent script and some truly gorgeous music, approachable and singable / it gives beauty and nobility and a clear voice to natural facts that are easy to repress / This show has been mounted by seasoned and richly talented professionals / as usual, Nautilus comes through with top quality in all aspects."

Composer-Librettist Studio

Joshua was invited to participate in The New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio as a performer. Presented in collaboration with Nautilus Music-Theater, five writers and five composers to work with professional performers, exploring the possibilities and basic elements of music-theater. The studio focuses on the process of collaboration through a series of brief exploratory assignments for the writers and composers. The exercises are then sight-read by the performers in brief working sessions. The participants rotate partners, and the process is repeated four more times. Within the two-week period, all composers work with all writers and all performers. Toward the end of the studio, an informal reading of all the compositions is held. The studio is co-directed by Ben Krywosz (Artistic Director of Nautilus Music-Theater) and music director Roger Ames.

Hail Oblivion

Created by Orion S. Johnstone and Joshua William Gelb HAIL OBLIVION is a surreal pirate adventure that unfurls across the globe and across centuries. From the Golden Age of Piracy (1717), where Major Stede Bonnet deserts his estate and family for a boat and crew, to the Golden Age of Hollywood (1943), where swashbuckling matinee idol Errol Flynn is arrested and exonerated in a very public statutory rape case, to the Golden Age of Venture Capitalism (present day), where a young advertising executive attempts to sell a luxury cruise in light of a recent Somali-Pirate hostage crisis. This propulsive fantasia is driven by a wild roller coaster of a score that carries us through these worlds with sea-shanties, jazz, rock, and beyond. An outlandish and provocative new piece of music theater, HAIL OBLIVION takes a hard look at our cultural infatuation with piracy, exposing the toxic heart of a hedonist fantasy drenched in violence, greed, and the relentless pursuit of individual freedom.
